Giants ny
Two days ago the New York Giants looked the “Team of Destiny” in the eye and didn’t blink. With Super Bowl XLII being the most anticipated Super Bowl in NFL history and The Patriots supposedly being the best team in NFL history up until that point, logic would suggest that The New York Giants, in achieving victory, have achieved more than a Championship in Arizona that day. They achieved a place in history. However in my humble opinion… they finally… SHUT THOSE OBNOXIOUS BOSTON FANS UP!

Being from NY I’ve seen the progression of several sports rivalries. The Knicks vs. Indiana. Reggie Miller was and will always be The Knicks Killer. The subtle rivalry of The Jets vs. The Dolphins a.k.a. the only team that sucks more than The Jets and of course The Yankees vs The Red Sox.

Now rivalries are good in any medium. Would Nas have dropped Ether if Jay never released Takeover? If Nintendo never commissioned Sony to help them compete with Sega CD, would we have The Playstation Console series? A rivalry brings out the best in you because you have the desire to aspire farther than your typical limits allow… however for Boston it was a long drought before they would meet the challenge their long time rival The New York Yankees would put forth. For 86 years this team was destined to suffer, some believe from The Curse of The Bambino and due to this loser image, people often sympathized with the Boston fans and their team. There was of course The Celtics Dynasty which lasted an unprecedented decade in the 60’s, but Boston much like New York is a baseball town first.

The Patriots helped spark Bostons sports scene back to life with what can only be considered a Dynasty in The NFL. 3 Titles in 4 years is nothing short of a grand achievement and in 2004 everything changed.

When The Redsox made history and won it all in 04′ Bostonians rejoiced in the Curse finally being lifted. The likable losers were losers no more. However this became the beginning of a long 4 years where Boston fans have become the most ANNOYING Fans in sports history.

First off, The Redsox winning two titles in 89 years doesn’t mean anything. You were due. In the time it took you to win 2 measly World Series’ THE NEW YORK YANKEES won 26… 26!!!! That’s about a 3rd of the Championships ever played… That is the GREATEST SPORTS DYNASTY IN HISTORY.

And now with The Pats… Bellicheat and the golden boy Tom Brady, making a fevered run at destiny. 19-0. If they win it all, Boston fans will have reason to talk for decades with perhaps the one achievement that could eclipse the 86 year drought… that being a Perfect NFL Season.

Sure Miami did it, but Miami played weak teams throughout and in a shorter season. Since then Miami has sunk lower than my personal fav team The NY Jets.

The Patriots were on the doorstep of doing what people said could never be done in this day and age of sports free agency and mercenary players, hoping to cap a Dynasty like none other and all that stood in their way were the lowly NY Giants. Those same Giants who lost the first 2 games of the season… those same Giants who went 10-6 in the regular season, but lost to the patriots in the last season of the game, Easily the best game of the regular season. The Giants who won 10 straight on the road… a League record. The Giants who took out Tampa Bay, The Heavily Favored Dallas and even more Heavily favored Green Bay Packers in back to back to back weeks. the Giants whose unproven quarterback Eli Manning , was striving to break out of the shadow of his older brother Peyton, who took The Colts all the way the year before. The Giants who were double digit underdogs coming into last Sunday.

This was a game they were supposed to lose, after all perfection shall not be denied. In the end though.. a perfect storm of Giants perseverance, determination and plain old guts lead The Giants into history, whilst leaving The Patriots along with the rest of Boston to ponder where it all went wrong.

After a season of running up the score on opponents, unbridled arrogance from fans and smug disrespect from The players and coach alike, The Patriots and Boston will know that on the biggest stage ever played upon, with the reign of legend waiting at the mountaintop if victory was obtained, The New York Giants reached that much farther and grasped the historical Brass Ring that will forever elude the Patriots. Never before has an 18 win team been seen as a failure, but when that on loss is the loss that counts… 18 means nothing.

The Boston Globe now has a million books detailing the 19 – 0 run the patriots made… They will be collecting dust or collectors items.

New York City returns to sports dominance. Eli solidified his place in history and in New York folklore. Michael Strahan got his long awaited ring and Tiki Barber sits wondering what could have been if he waited 1…more….year.

This is the only time you’ll see that 1 is indeed greater than 18.

And it was only fitting that a New York Team is that very 1.

  1. I hate Boston fans….. But BkScribe dont you think some of the earlier Yankee championships could be a little tainted by Organized Crime, Now I dont have anything to back that statement up. But I do think sports in the early part of the century had a higher risk of being fixed, because of the money avialable and the athletes not being as well compensated as they’re today.
