Mike Tyson speaks on his struggles with soberity

Mike Tyson held a press conference on Friday (Aug 23) marking his return to the Boxing industry, this time as a fight promoter under his company Iron Mike Productions; and to promote his first fight card.

At the presser, held at the Turning Stone Resort in New York, the former heavy weight champ broke down in front of cameras as he he confessed he hadn’t been truthful about his ongoing fight to stay sober.

“I haven’t drank or took drugs in six days, and for me that’s a miracle. I’ve been lying to everybody else that think I was sober, but I’m not,” a tearful Tyson told reporters. “This is my sixth day. I’m never gonna use again.”

Tyson openly discussed an encounter with his former trainer Teddy Atlas, now a ESPN analyst, and his attempts to make peace with Atlas. Tyson also recounted a recent AA meeting and his ongoing battle against his demons.

“I’m a motherfucker. I’m a bad guy sometimes,” Tyson told reporters. “I did a lot of bad things, and I want to be forgiven. So in order for me to be forgiven, I hope they can forgive me. I wanna change my life, I wanna live a different life now. I wanna live my sober life. I don’t wanna die. I’m on the verge of dying, because I’m a vicious alcoholic. Wow. God, this is some interesting stuff.”
