BET is rolling out the third season of “American Gangster” later this month.
Narrated by Ving Rhames, the documentary series chronicles the life and times of some of the most notorious African American drug kingpins and gang members from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Past episodes have featured such underworld standouts as Frank Lucas, Larry Davis and Stanley “Tookie” Williams.
But the series has at times veered towards individuals not typically considered gangsters in the traditional sense as when it profiled infamous FBI director J. Edgar Hoover and the U.S. government’s counter intelligence program, COINTELPRO, which targeted Black revolutionary groups in the ‘60s and ‘70s like the Black Panthers.
“American Gangster” premiere’s October 23.
