‘Spartacus’ star, Andy Whitfield, dies of cancer

Andy Whitfield, star of the Starz cable network’s gladiator series ‘Spartacus,’ lost his battle with cancer in Australia on Sunday.

Whitfield, 39, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, in March 2010. Born in Wales Whitfield called Australia home and found critical acclaim in the lead role on ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand,’ the story of a soldier-turned-gladiator who leads a rebellion against the Roman Empire.

Whitfield‘s wife, Vashti, issued a statement on Sunday confirming his death. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his love wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer, he passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have helped carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.”
