In statements on social media on Thrusday, December 31, the family of legendary rapper MF DOOM announced his death. He was 49.

MF DOOM was born Daniel Dumile. He began his music career in the early 1990s as Zev Love X, a member of the group KMD. The group, which consisted of Dumile, his younger brother Dingilizwe (DJ Subroc), and Alonzo Hodge (Onyx the Birthstone Kid) disbanded in 1993 after Dingilizwe was killed in a car accident.

Dumile reemerged in 1997 under the name MF DOOM and donning the Doom mask — an homage to the comic book villain, Dr. Doom. Throughout his career as MF DOOM, Dumile built a reputation for delivering intricate rhymes that appealed to fans of true lyricists. Dumile’s rhymes were laced with pop culture trivia, obscure references, the occasional sample from a random 1980s cartoon, and often backed by simple abstract tracks — an unmistakable sound that many would find difficult to replicate.

Dumile’s wife, Jasmine, announced his on his Instagram page. At the moment, the cause and date of his death remain a mystery. According to the Instagram post, Dumile passed away two months ago, on October, 31. It’s unclear why the revelation of his death was delayed.

“Begin all things by giving thanks to THE ALL!

To Dumile

The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be. My world will never be the same without you. Words will never express what you and Malachi mean to me, I love both and adore you always. May THE ALL continue to bless you, our family and the planet.

All my Love
Jasmine

Transitioned October 31,2020”
