‘Insecure’ creator and star Issa Rae hosted the CFDA Fashion Awards Monday night (June 4) and didn’t waste time letting everyone know her feelings about Kanye West and his comments about slavery being a “choice” during her monologue.

“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black. Only when it’s convenient. That joke was my choice, just like slavery.”

Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian was in attendance to receive CFDA’s Influence Award, quipping during cceptance speech, “I’m kind of shocked that I am winning a fashion award when I am naked most of the time,” but didn’t have much to say about Rae’s comments.

Rae, the first African-American to emcee the awards show, attended the event at the Brooklyn Museum in New York dressed in a Pyer Moss gown, accessorized with a belt emblazoned with the words, “Every N***a Is a Star”, a reference to Boris Gardiner’s 1973 album.

Other attendees included Naomi Campbell, who received the Fashion Icon Award, “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross, Oprah, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, singer Ciara, model Gigi Hadid, and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

West’s sister Kendall Jenner, Oprah Winfrey, “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, singer Ciara, model-actress Gigi Hadid and actresses-turned-fashion moguls Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.
