Dwyane Wade in a recent interview with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on their All The Smoke Podcast, opens about his son Zion and gives advice to parents who may be dealing with a child who is gay or transgender.

“You want to talk about strength and courage? My 12-year-old has way more than I have,” Wade said.

Wade credits his wife Gabrielle Union for opening his eyes about his son and being more compassionate about his situation.

“You can learn something from your kids, but in the household, now, it’s all we talk about. We talk about our kids being seen by each of us… We want them to be whoever they feel like they can be in this world. Understand that you can be whoever. You can be whatever.”

Wade has gotten a lot of criticism from social media. There’s been backlash over his son wearing girl’s clothes and painted nails. But Wade says what’s important is that he loves his child no matter what.

“I’ve watched my son from day one become into who she now eventually has come into. For me, nothing changes with my love. Nothing changes with my responsibilities. Only thing I gotta do now is get smarter and educate myself more. That’s my job.”
