Judge reschedules Buju Banton’s drug trial

A Tampa judge has set the trial for Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton for September.

Banton’s attorney David Oscar Markus confirmed that a judge set the date, denying a motion for a speedy trial and a request to sever his trial from the co-defendants’ trial. The trial was initially set for April, then changed to June.

Markus argued that the case against Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, should be tried sooner.

Markus said his client wants his day in court and “All we want is to present his case to a jury.”

Banton has been in jail since December on charges that he purchased cocaine from an undercover Sarasota police officer.
