Jahseh Onfroy

Rap artist XXXTentacion was shot and killed Monday (June 18) in Florida in what police are calling a drive-by.

According to the Broward County sheriff’s office, an unidentified gunman approached XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Onfroy, as he left a Deerfield Beach motorcycle dealership in a black BMW.

There are reports that the gunman also removed a Louis Vuitton bag from XXXTentacion’s vehicle before fleeing, though that has not been confirmed.

The sheriff’s office stated Onfroy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

XXXTentacion performs at the Rolling Loud Festival in downtown Miami, May 6, 2017.
Onfroy started his music career on SoundCloud in 2014. A year later he released his first hit, ‘Look at Me’, which hit No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In May of 2017 he released his mix tape ‘Revenge’. Later that year he earned a spot on XXL’s Freshman Class magazine cover.

His first studio album ’17’, released in August 2017, garnered praise from fans and compelled Kendrick Lamar to tweet, “Listen to this album if you feel anything. Raw thoughts.” The album charted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

Onfroy released his second studio album, ‘?’, on March 2018. Debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. The singles “Sad!” and “Changes” peaked at numbers 7 and 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively.

Onfroy wasn’t without his troubles. At the time of his death he was fighting a 2016 domestic violence charge for allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend. In December of 2016 those charges were upgraded with an additional 15 felony charges, including witness tampering and harassment.

He had been on house arrest as recently as this past March, but a judge lifted the order to allow the rapper to tour.

Onfray was in the spotlight last month when music streaming service, Spotify, announced it would no longer feature Onfray’s or R. Kelly‘s music in the company’s curated playlists as part of a new artist conduct policy.

Spotify was forced to do an about-face earlier this month following backlash from fans and artists.

XXXTentacion was 20 years old.
